The Main Street Coalition is a grass roots coalition of residents, community and neighborhood organizations, labor, small business and faith leaders and their congregations from the local area.

OUR GOAL

The goal of the Main Street Coalition is to advocate for good development in Garden Grove. We seek to provide a voice for the residents and our established small businesses for future decisions in our city.

WHY A WAL– MART SUPERCENTER?

Wal-Mart is proposing a 173,157 sq. ft. Superstore (including a full grocery store) on the corner of Brookhurst and Chapman that will be open 24-hours a day. A development of this size and type is in direct  contradiction to the direction our city should be taking. This development will negatively impact the residents and small businesses in Garden Grove by bringing poverty wages, driving out our small businesses and burdening the police and health services in our city.

Wal-Mart burdens local police. Since 2002, 686 police calls have been made from the Wal-Mart store in Anaheim, costing local taxpayers $53,165 in police calls alone. (1)

Wal-Mart brings poverty wages. The average two person family needs $27,948 to meet basic needs in 2005, well above what Wal-Mart reports its average full-time employee earns. Wal-Mart claims its average associate earns $9.68 and hour which would make their annual income around $17,114. (2)

Wal-Mart hurts small business. A study in Iowa showed that over a ten year period after Wal-Mart came to town, $603 million dollars in sales were lost and 7,326 business closed. (3)
