Dashiel Johnson, Executive Director of Adjunct Faculty United AFT 6106

The North Orange County Community College District has refused Adjunct Faculty United AFT Local 6106’s proposal for healthcare. This is abhorrent because under a new state law (more info hyperlinked below) it will cost the district nothing to provide us the same healthcare benefits they provided to our full-time faculty colleagues. We are calling for:

  1. Full healthcare benefits for those who work a 40% load. This means we have access to the same family medical benefits that full-time faculty have access to.
  2. Full healthcare benefits for those who work in multiple districts.
  3. For those who do not meet the criteria in points 1 and 2 we demanded a $3,000 healthcare premium reimbursement per semester who work at least a 20% load.

Background: Starting in Fall of 2021, Adjunct Faculty United, working alongside our statewide affiliate, the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), began lobbying the state for $200,000,000 of ongoing funding for healthcare for adjunct faculty. We sent members to Sacramento for a lobby day, spoke at legislative sessions, collected hundreds of signatures for petitions, and launched a social media campaign. These efforts resulted in the state legislature passing AB-190 and provided $200,000,000 of funding for adjunct faculty healthcare. This funding is annual and ongoing. You can learn more in the resources in the hyperlinks above.

At this time, 7 districts have taken advantage of this new law and are now in the process of providing adjunct faculty with healthcare coverage who work a 40 percent load.  These districts include Los Rios, Palarma, San Diego, Grossmont-Cuyamaca, Glendale, San Luis Obispo, and Southwestern with dozens of others beginning to negotiate these benefits as well.

We are asking for your support by signing our petition, endorsing our demands for healthcare and most importantly, joining our rally on March 14th. Please RSVP here.
